When to Change vs Rekey a Lock
A rekey changes which key operates the lock by replacing the pins inside the cylinder — the hardware stays. A lock change replaces the entire lock. Choose a lock change when: the lock is physically damaged, the cylinder is worn or picks too easily, you're upgrading to a higher-security grade, or you're replacing a keyed knob with a deadbolt for a vacation rental application.
In the PCB rental market, lock changes are often the right move when taking over a unit that's had years of turnover — worn cylinders, lost keys piling up, and hardware that doesn't meet current standards for rental properties. We assess on arrival and give you a straight answer about whether a rekey or a change is the right call for your situation.
Lock Grades for PCB Properties
The ANSI/BHMA grading system runs Grade 1 (commercial duty), Grade 2 (residential heavy-use), and Grade 3 (light residential). Most beach rental properties on Front Beach Rd and Thomas Drive were originally fitted with Grade 3 hardware. After years of vacation rental traffic and salt air, those locks fail quickly. We install Grade 1 and Grade 2 deadbolts for properties that see high turnover, with finish options that resist the coastal corrosion common in 32408 and 32413.
